The Domestic Unit is designed to meet the needs of approximately 4-5 people daily, working all year round in temperate climates. This compost toilet offers an eco-friendly waste management solution without needing water or electricity.
Key Features
Overflow Management
This unit includes an evaporation tank to capture any urine overflow should it occur ensuring compliance with regulations this preventing any ground contamination. The toilet fan aids in the evaporation process preventing any ground contamination.
The unit can operate in wet areas and on slops therefore offering flexible installation options.
The unit can be cleaned initially after approximately 18 months to 2 years. This can be done by removing the lid (secured by four screws) and extract 2-3 shovel loads of compost, which should be mixed and buried into the ground. Decomposition through the system reduces waste to about 4% of the input.
The addition of sawdust, small wood chips (non-tanalised), or other organic materials added periodically will assist with the decomposition. These materials can be added daily or weekly. Tiger worms can also be introduced after 9 months to assist with the aeration of the pile.
This unit operates independently of power and water sources. An electric fan can be added for extra ventilation if needed.

Our units are made from UV-treated polyethylene so very little work is required for external maintenance, and cleaning is easy. Bio-Loos meet New Zealand standards and New Zealand Building Codes and have been used by D.O.C. and many local and regional authorities for the past 24 years.
Ground Preparation
You typically require a minimum area of 1.5m x 2.5m (for the Domestic model) to be clear so your builder can dig the vault section of the Bio-Loo system into the ground. An ideal environment would be clear of any rivers, streams and areas prone to getting water logged. It also needs to be clear of large tree root structures.

How composting toilets work
Technically, a “composting toilet” is a toilet in which composting takes place. Usually, the composting chamber is located under the toilet. The most basic way to compost humanure is simply to collect it in a toilet receptacle and add it to a compost pile. The toilet acts only as a collection device, while the composting takes place at a separate location. Such a toilet requires little, if any, expense and can be constructed and operated by people of simple means in a wide range of cultures around the world.
Composting toilets are recycling devices that create no pollution and recover the soil nutrients in human manure and urine.
NO POWER NO WATER NO CHEMICALS
Aerobic composting works the same way as garden composting, except faster, using naturally occurring aerobic (air-requiring) bacteria in a controlled, secured environment. Over time this producers safe, environmentally friendly compost.
